The Neurobiology of Rejection

Studies show that social rejection activates the same regions of the brain as physical pain (the anterior cingulate cortex). The leader knows that by threatening your place in the community, they are effectively threatening your survival instincts.

The "Jezebel" Label

When someone leaves or questions authority, the leader must de-humanize them. They use "loaded language" like calling the person "divisive," "rebellious," or "having a Jezebel spirit." This signals to the rest of the tribe that this person is now "spiritually radioactive" and must be avoided.
